field notes, mmxiv-iv-xiv

The wind was gusting 30-40 mph on our walk this afternoon, when suddenly, plop, a baby yellow-rumped warbler landed at our feet. He had a perplexed, "How did I end up here?" look on his face. We stopped and stood still. A few seconds later he hoisted himself into the air and half-flew, half-blew to a treeline thirty yards away. The flight was awkward, but he stuck the landing. Whew! He may have fledged a few days too soon, but it looked like he had the basic skills to take care of himself.

  1. That sounds more skilled than the new robins we have seen trying to learn the art of flying.
