Children know perfectly well that unicorns aren't real, but they also know that books about unicorns, if they are good books, are true books. All too often, that's more than Mummy and Daddy know; for, in denying their childhood, the adults have denied half their knowledge, and are left with the sad, sterile little fact: 'Unicorns aren't real.' And that fact is one that never got anyone anywhere...

prognosticatin'

Here's my prediction for November 2016: Trump gets the R nomimation and Clinton gets the D, but Trump offers Sanders the VP spot and Trump/Sanders go on to win with somewhere around 84 percent of the vote, unless Clinton offers Warren the VP slot (and Warren cough cough accepts), in which case Trump/Sanders still win but only just barely.

Today the creek decided it would be more fun to have me sitting in it instead of standing on its bank, which slipped suddenly out from under me. Some nearby vultures were amused.

Are pets really good for us? (Pacific Standard)

A quibble I had with a recent book on therapy dogs was that it was relentlessly positive, as if nothing but good could ever result from keeping a dog. That may be true for people who have highly trained, well-mannered therapy dogs, but I would have liked more balance. On the other hand, some of the recent studies on the connections between dogs and blood pressure, immune system response, etc., are pretty compelling.

Neighborhood pears and oaks and ashes are already budding. Our last freeze last year was at the end of the first week of March so they might be jumping the gun a little.

Meet the real-life pet dogs of Dr Seuss (The Guardian). Surprised to learn that The Cat in The Hat didn't come out until the good doctor was in his 50s.
