They're about six feet up under a shallow overhang on a 30-foot cliff face. This was one of the smaller groups of about a half-dozen but the others weren't really accessible. (When Mike was little we once tucked into a sun shelter on a trail hike only to discover the ceiling covered in an 8-inch thick mat of these...we did not stay long.)
I think it's a thermoregulation thing. (I'll try to get a wider shot of the cliff face with the different groups sometime this week.) They're harmless but I wouldn't want to disturb one of these agglomerations - might lead to hyperventilation, lol.
