Snippet 1: Ursula K LeGuin's speech at the 65th National Book Awards.

Snippet 2:

- Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Emile, 1762

Snippet 3:

- Jón Kalman Stefánsson, The Sorrow of Angels, 2013
That's a heck of a sentence. Go back and read it again. This is a great novel, best enjoyed by firelight. But read Stefánsson's Heaven and Hell first; Sorrow is the second in a three-part series. (Full disclosure: I'm related to the translator.)

field notes, mmxiv-xi-xvi
Damp and chilly this morning. We had our first freeze of the season Friday morning - 30 degrees; Thursday was close at 32.5. Looks like Monday night/Tuesday morning the low will be 23. That's pretty cold for these parts. It's supposed to warm up slowly into next weekend, maybe with a little rain along the way.
