tepary beans
These would pass for pebbles if not for the little red circles around the blowholes. This is probably two-thirds of this year's total harvest - there are a few more coming along still. The beans did better than the peas, though. With these I got back about twice the number I planted, but only about half with the peas.
My Native American food book says the desert people preferred these to other beans, because when you eat tepary beans, you only have to eat twice a day, but when you eat ordinary beans, you have to eat three times.

the visitor dun dun dunnnhhhh
An armadillo dug up all of our tepary beans; it shoved the chicken-wire fence frame to the side and dove right in. Probably looking for grubs. That's OK. The beans weren't doing too well. We got enough of them to re-plant next year, but not enough to make a meal of 'em. (They're awfully pretty beans - tan with a bright, thin red outline around the whaddayacallit, bean-hole.)
