the cactus with the spider from a few posts below
turned out to be a "horse crippler cactus" and
that sounded ominous so the owners let me borrow a shovel
and gave me permission to give it a new home

the (very old) skull was just over the fence on the neighbor's property
i thought it might have been a coyote
but upon further investigation it looks more like a dog
a coyote would have a flatter nose and a less prominent sagittal crest
that's little Casper in the bottom picture, i rubbed his gums and he liked it
but disclaimer, please don't try that with an unfamiliar equine
not even a little one

the cranes were squawking overhead just as i got to the ranch
and over a couple late morning hours
a band of clouds from the eastern to the western horizon,
but only a few miles wide, passed over, north to south, following the cranes
