trail and exercise notes, mmxvi-ix-xxx

120 miles in September, including 14 at altitude, 106 with the dogs, and 14.5 w/20 pounds in the new vest (on early morning walks with Ondine).  1,354 for the year.

An impromptu medieval Icelandic hymn sung at a train station (Atlas Obscura). But they buried the lede: apparently it's totally OK to go barefoot in European train stations.

In other Iceland-related news: Reykjavik gets it (NY Times).

The most powerful secretive empires ever known (The Guardian). "Electrical current itself completely changes our relationship to the world and, in the process, reconstitutes us. A medium is not merely something that feeds us content. It is a condition like air or water, through which we move without noticing."

Team Unplug! (At some point this blog will evolve into pencil and paper, much as ocean mammals are creatures who once left the sea but then thought better of it.)

squirrel save!

The dogs found this little guy hiding in the jasmine, probably blown out of his nest in this morning's thunderstorms. Bren got him to grab a stick and took him to the red oak, and then his mom came down from the canopy and took over.

So there's a meme where you describe yourself in three fictional characters:

John Dunbar (Dances With Wolves)
Remus Lupin (Harry Potter)
Doc Holliday (Tombstone)

Carmageddon (The Guardian). I'll vote for the first candidate who promises to make privately owned autos illegal.

The 75-year-old arm wrestler (NY Times). "I think my work ethic has been the main reason I'm still competing," he said. "So many people, as they get older, they just think they can't do as much as they used to do, and that's just not true." Right on.

dsged*

I probably shouldn't wear this to a bank, huh. I've been throwing a couple weight plates into a backpack off and on over the last couple months but that was hard on both the pack and my back, so I got a weight vest. I'll mostly use it for walking but it might be good for squats, too. Maybe some push-ups. Wind sprints. Stair climbs ha ha ha no. We'll see.

Bren said the mailman wasn't too happy bringing this up to the house, and yea, I felt like taking an ibuprofen after I got it out of the box. It's 45 pounds - 18 pockets for 2-1/2 pound weights, each about the size of a bar of soap (and ten of which I quickly unloaded and stored in the closet).

was it really only a week ago

A couple more from last week - my brother Steve took the first one. I grabbed the second one on the way to my sister Annie's house (I'll park my 40 acres and mule right exactly there please.)

...and one more go-around for my new all-time favorite shot:

I wanna go back
