i'll have my mid-life crisis to go, please...

...but sensibly: it's a 2008 w/69k miles. I didn't go completely off the deep end - :)

odin in a cone

Guest post, courtesy of Amy - Odin was groggy and depressed upon waking in a cone after some minor surgery today.

well it worked for telemachus

I was feeling a bit blue this weekend until I ran across this passage in the Odyssey:
...he went to the place of assembly spear in hand - not alone, for his two hounds went with him...
Smooch-fest! Belly rubs! (O&P were discomfited by being called "hounds" at first but were mollified when I explained that I was using the term generically.)

Also, this: Dogs: an uncomplicated relationship (from The Guardian).

snippets, 9-20-2013

A jewel at the heart of quantum physics. Buddhists have known this for a long time: the Buddhist mantra, "om mani padme hum," means "the jewel in the heart of the lotus." Physicists are arriving mathematically at a place the monks found a long time ago. (Heh. I note that last sentence is built on a foundation of space and time. Hey, whatever. I am, for now, embodied.) But, this is interesting. It implies that we're manifestations of a universe that knows itself, unconstrained by space and time. Maybe there's an answer to the question, "Why?" And maybe we already know the answer.

albizia

We've always called these "mimosas" but I was informed today that they're actually silk trees.

beautyberry

vermicious knids

A common lawn weed. I don't know what they're really called.

bugs

The assassin bug crawled onto my lens right after I snapped his picture. Apparently they carry chagas disease, so I quickly puffed him off. (Not sure if it's this particular subspecies; these are awfully common - you'd think there'd be a lot more cases.)

they should have listened to that guy

From the Iliad, Panthous:

The darkness of night will for a time stay the son of Peleus, but if he find us here in the morning when he sallies forth in full armour, we shall have knowledge of him in good earnest.

Heh. Yeah you will.

Design notes for a new cartoon series. Needs a little refinement - the legs are especially muddled - but I'm liking the woodcut look. :)

The kidneywood is one of ours from a gathering of wild seeds; we have three in pots and a couple in the garden beds - first time they've blossomed.
